Tooth decay is still one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in the U.S. - but small daily habits can make a big difference in protecting growing smiles.

From sugary drinks to the importance of fluoride, these are the kinds of things we focus on every day in pediatric dentistry to help keep children healthy and cavity-free.

Good oral health starts early, and prevention is always easier than treatment. Establishing healthy habits young can help set children up for a lifetime of healthier smiles.

Have questions about your child’s oral health? We’re always happy to help!

Dr. Ashley breaks down how high-acidity, high-sugar drinks like sports drinks, energy drinks, sodas, and sugary coffee drinks can affect teeth over time.

The acidity in these drinks slowly wears down tooth enamel- the strong outer layer that protects your teeth. Every time teeth are exposed to acid, the enamel becomes weaker and more vulnerable to sensitivity, discoloration, and decay.

The sugar in these drinks then creates another problem- bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and produce even more acid, creating a cycle that continues to weaken teeth. Over time, that damage can move past the enamel and deeper into the tooth, where cavities begin to form.

The more teeth are exposed to acid and sugar, the more opportunity there is for enamel erosion and tooth decay.

A few simple swaps:
• Drink more water throughout the day
• Limit sugary and acidic drinks when possible
• Avoid sipping on them for hours- if you do have one, drink it relatively quickly
• Rinse with water after drinking them

These small habits and awareness make a difference when it comes to protecting your teeth long term.

If your teen is experiencing tooth sensitivity, discoloration, or frequent cavities, our team would be happy to help! Visit hartlandpd.com for more information.

WHAT IS THE SOAN?
The SOAN is a computer-assisted system used to deliver local dental anesthesia in a slower, more controlled way than a traditional syringe. It’s designed to make numbing more comfortable, especially for kids and anxious patients.

HOW IT WORKS
Instead of a manual “push” of anesthetic, the SOAN uses a small pen-like hand piece that delivers numbing medication at a controlled, steady rate.

The dentist places the tip at the injection site near the tooth being treated. The anesthetic is released slowly into the tissue, allowing the area to numb gradually instead of all at once. This controlled flow helps reduce the sharp pinch or pressure feeling that can come with traditional injections.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
The SOAN only numbs the tooth and the surrounding area. Your child will not have a numb lip, cheek, or tongue.

This means they avoid that uncomfortable, “whole face feels numb” sensation that can happen with traditional numbing.

WHY WE USE THE SOAN AT HPD
• More comfortable numbing experience
• Less anxiety for kids
• No lingering numb feeling in the face
• Smoother, more relaxed appointments

Yesterday, our team completed BLS (Basic Life Support) training to stay prepared and confident in the event of a medical emergency.

BLS training includes essential life-saving skills such as CPR, AED use, and emergency response techniques designed to help provide immediate care when every second matters.

In pediatric dentistry, this training is especially important because caring for children means being prepared for all situations- even the unexpected. From helping little ones feel comfortable during treatment to maintaining a safe environment for every patient, ongoing education and emergency preparedness are a big part of the care we provide every day.

We are proud of our team for continuing to prioritize safety, education, and the highest level of care for our patients and families!

WHAT DO ENERGY DRINKS DO TO YOUR TEETH?
Energy drinks create a highly acidic environment in your mouth that can wear down teeth over time. This happens through a combination of acid, sugar, and frequency of use.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING?
These drinks are very acidic, which lowers the pH in your mouth. When that happens, tooth enamel (the protective outer layer) begins to soften and weaken.

At the same time, the sugar feeds bacteria in the mouth. Those bacteria produce even more acid, continuing the cycle and increasing the risk of damage.

WHAT’S NEXT?
With repeated exposure, enamel can become thin or worn down. Once enamel is lost, it does not grow back.
This can lead to:
• tooth sensitivity
• increased risk of cavities
• visible wear or discoloration

OUR RECOMMENDATION
We do not recommend energy drinks for kids or teens. With growing bodies, the high levels of caffeine and added ingredients can have negative effects on both oral health and overall health.

If you’re noticing sensitivity or changes in your teeth, we recommend scheduling a dental visit so we can evaluate early signs of enamel wear and help prevent long-term damage.
