What is keeping you from sleeping well? I used to think I had insomnia. Then I thought that I couldn't sleep because I had a lot on my mind. Then I got tested and found out that I had obstructive sleep apnea!

As a child I used to wonder why my grandparents slept in separate beds. I never asked, but I bet it had something to do with snoring and sleep apnea. Did you know that high blood pressure is linked to sleep apnea. When the airway is closed off from a blockage for any period of time, the heart will react by working harder. This wears out the heart. Having a successful and productive work day begins the night before with a good night’s sleep! And by that I mean good restorative sleep that allows you to fully recover and recharge. It's important to have uninterrupted sleep with enough deep sleep included. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣

My top 5 sleep tips for more restful sleep include:⁣
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⁣
1. Try to get to bed by 10 pm. Studies show that the most restorative sleep happens between 11 pm - 2 am.⁣

2. Make the room as dark as possible. Try blackout curtains and eliminating any lights (that includes turning off your tv!)⁣

Relaxation techniques before bed are GREAT! Have you tried 4-7-8 breathing?⁣

Get comfortable. You can keep your eyes open or closed:⁣

Inhale for 4 seconds⁣

Hold your breath for 7 seconds⁣

Exhale slowly, for 8 seconds⁣

Repeat several times⁣

What does this do? By taking in a deep breath and holding it, you’re increasing the body’s oxygen level. A long, slow exhale has a meditative quality to it that is relaxing. The slow exhale is also very similar to the pace of breathing your body adopts as you’re falling asleep.
