Dr. Barton E. McGirl, Dentistry While You Sleep We are committed to provide personalized comprehensive dental care (education, prevention, rehabilitation and health maintenance) under anesthesia/sedation

Dr. McGirl graduated from the University of Toronto, Dental School; he then completed a General Practice Residency at the University of Western Ontario. His interest in teaching led to an appointment as a part-time faculty member at the University of Western Ontario while also maintaining a private practice. Having always had a keen interest in anesthesia, he was compelled to enter a Dental Anesth

esiology Residency at the University of Pittsburgh. This interest culminated in an outpatient Anesthesiology Fellowship. During his anesthesiology training he gained exposure to pioneering work in Oral Implantology. At the completion of his anesthesia training he further completed an Oral Implantology Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. To date, he is part of a select group of Oral Implantologists who provide both implant surgery (placement) and implant restoration (attaching new teeth). We are committed to provide personalized comprehensive care, (education, prevention, rehabilitation and health maintenance) for discriminating patients. We are unique within New England in our ability to provide extremely specialized care for patients who wish to be asleep for their dental care. It is estimated that up to 25% of patients require these services (resulting from fear/anxiety, medical conditions, extensive treatment needs, surgery etc.) Patients We Treat Meet Dr. McGirl Home Testimonials FAQs Contact Us Services We Provide

These are all very relevant questions to ask about your own dental anesthesia visit as an adult. In addition to these guidelines I would also include the following questions: Who will be administering the anesthesia medications; dentist, assistant, etc?, Will the dentist remain throughout the procedure?, Who will monitor my recovery; dentist, assistant, etc? and finally What are the credentials of dentist administering anesthesia; weekend course, general anesthesia residency, etc?

In our office Dr. McGirl personally starts the IV, administers all medications, remains throughout the entire procedure, monitors the recovery and is a dental anesthesiologist.

Dr. McGirl has advised his patients for years to eliminate the habit of sipping soda or coffee throughout the day. The constant exposure of "sugar bathing" your teeth is a recipe for advanced carious activity. At the very least consider rinsing your mouth/teeth with a small glass of water when you finish a sugary drink.

Sweetened beverages have become a treat that many Americans have every day. The truth is that these drinks are not healthy, especially for our dental health and smiles.

After reading this story, I continue to be appalled at our health care system's (more specifically health insurance companies) ability to remove the mouth from the rest of body. Denying any financial responsibility for oral health and a subscribers medical well being. Hard to imagine with all of the medical documentation supporting the relationship between dental and systemic infection that the insurance industry can continue to deny dental health coverage. Truly shameful to say the least! Dental infection should not be taken lightly, despite the insurance companies stance that dental health is not health care.
