Can dental implants prevent bone loss?

The alveolar bone exists as a support for teeth on both the upper and lower jaw. When no teeth are present, whether due deterioriation or extraction, the bone atrophies and withers away.

This is one of the challenges presented with dentures, because there is nothing there for the bone to support. Dental implants, when performend correctly by an experienced doctor, give the alveolar bone something to support, strengthening and preserving the bone in the process.
