🦷 DR. NELSON EXPLAINS: Why do my gums bleed when I floss?
A lot of people think bleeding means they should STOP flossing…
But usually, the opposite is true.
Bleeding gums are often a sign of inflammation caused by plaque and bacteria building up around the gums.
The good news?
Healthy gums usually improve with consistent brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings. 💙
If your gums bleed regularly, feel swollen, or are uncomfortable, don’t ignore it. Catching gum disease early makes treatment much easier.
Your mouth is trying to tell you something — and we’re here to help.

🦷 Dr. Nelson Explains: Why a Black Tea Bag helps after an extraction

After a tooth extraction, controlling bleeding is really important. One simple trick we recommend is using a black tea bag.

Why? Because tea contains something called tannins. These help your blood clot, can slow down bleeding naturally and soothe the area after an extraction.

It’s simple, effective, and something you may already have at home. Dentistry doesn’t always have to be complicated!

🦷 DR. NELSON EXPLAINS:

Why Do Some Patients Need Cleanings Every 3–4 Months Instead of Every 6?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“If my spouse only comes every 6 months, why do I have to come every 3 or 4 months?”

The answer is simple:

Periodontal (gum) disease changes how your mouth needs to be maintained.

When periodontal disease causes bone loss around the teeth, it creates deeper spaces called periodontal pockets. These pockets make it easier for bacteria, plaque, and tartar to build up below the gumline where a toothbrush and floss can’t reach.

Research has shown that harmful bacteria can begin repopulating these areas in as little as 90 days.

That’s why waiting 6 months between visits can allow inflammation and infection to return, potentially leading to:

• More bone loss
• Gum recession
• Loose teeth
• Bad breath
• Increased risk of tooth loss

A periodontal maintenance visit every 3–4 months helps us:

✅ Remove bacteria before it causes damage
✅ Monitor areas of bone loss
✅ Reduce inflammation and bleeding
✅ Help preserve your teeth for as long as possible

Think of it this way:

A 3–4 month periodontal maintenance visit isn’t because we’re trying to clean your teeth more often—it’s because we’re trying to help you keep them.

🥤 DID YOU KNOW?
Even sugar-free drinks can still damage your teeth if they’re highly acidic.
Drinks like:
• Energy drinks
• Sparkling water
• Lemon water
• Sports drinks
• Soda
• Citrus drinks
can slowly weaken and wear away enamel over time.
When enamel thins, teeth can become:
• More sensitive
• More yellow
• More prone to chips and wear
A few simple ways to help protect your smile:
✔ Drink water afterward
✔ Use a straw when possible to pull it away from teeth
✔ Avoid sipping acidic drinks all day
✔ Brush at least twice daily
Healthy habits make a big difference over time. 💙

😬 DID YOU KNOW?
Clenching and grinding your teeth — especially while sleeping — can actually crack teeth over time.
Many patients don’t even realize they do it.
Common signs include:
• Morning headaches
• Jaw soreness
• Tooth sensitivity
• Flattened teeth
• Random sharp pain when chewing
Over time, the pressure from grinding can create tiny fractures that turn into major dental problems.
If you’ve been noticing these symptoms, we can help evaluate the damage and discuss options like custom night guards to help protect your smile. 💙
