COMMUNITY HEALTH AWARENESS: MEASLES IN WISCONSIN

September 1st 2026

A measles outbreak is occurring in Wisconsin. Although the current outbreak is centered in southwestern Wisconsin, measles spreads easily and can travel quickly between communities.
Measles is more than a rash. Symptoms usually begin with:
• High fever
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red or watery eyes
• A rash that commonly starts on the face and spreads down the body

If you or your child develop these symptoms, or believe, you may have been exposed:
-Stay home and call your healthcare provider before going to a clinic, urgent care, or emergency department. Calling ahead allows healthcare staff to protect other patients and community members from exposure.

-The best protection against measles is the measles, mumps, and rubella—or MMR—vaccine. Check your family’s vaccination records and contact your healthcare provider if you are unsure whether you are protected.

Do not wait for measles to reach our community before taking action:
• Check your vaccination status.
• Watch for symptoms.
• Call ahead before seeking care.
• Stay home if you may have measles.

For questions about vaccination or possible exposure, contact your providers nurse or call Community Health Department at the clinic.

The Department of Aging would like to say Waewaenen to all who attended the Elders Picnic on August 21, 2026.
We had had nothing but POSITIVE feedback regarding the picnic.
The staff and vendors had a great time with all elders who came to talk and ask questions.
Start thinking about next year theme. Watch for a survey comng out in February-March for the picnic for fresh ideas.
