What better way to conclude your work week than appreciating a smile overhaul?

Typically, the feature point of a smile is a patient’s maxillary central incisors (aka upper front teeth). Ideal central incisors need to be (1) anatomically congruent with the adjacent lateral incisors, (2) similar to or slightly brighter than adjacent teeth with respect to color and translucency, (3) proportionately wider than the lateral incisors, and (4) proportionately longer than the lateral incisors by 0.5 to 1mm. Variations abound, but these general esthetic principles tend to yield pleasing visual results when it comes to yer pearly whites!

This patient’s central incisors had a less-than-ideal grade in many respects (symmetry, anatomy, color, proportion), BUT we overhauled them both in a single visit with crowns, and now his smile is indeed a feature, not a bug!

Does one of your front teeth look…different?

Maybe not even that bad, but just different?

Asymmetrical contrast is a visual magnet when it comes to facial esthetics. Not everybody can tell you why something looks less-than-pleasing, but eyes are always drawn to contrasts like these. This patient wanted to improve the color and contour of her “different” central incisor, so we bonded an Ivoclar composite resin veneer into place and watched the contrast literally disappear. No anesthetic, less than an hour, contrast gone.

Broken front teeth are as unfair as they are common. Tons of people have a “tooth story” about anterior dental trauma, and most of those folks have to find a way to laugh about their misfortune to keep from crying about it. Solutions for these sudden, unexpected problems are often “quick fixes” that are either insufficiently durable, insufficient esthetic, or both!

So what do we do if a patient wants something better? We use ceramic and work some for a same-day, long-term, highly esthetic solution that looks as natural as the original chomper. We can control form, color, translucency, and characterization enough to blend this material beautifully with the surrounding teeth, making for a very happy ending to tooth stories like this one.
