Pumpkins are out. It’s a good time to check what’s left in your FSA. 🎃

If you’ve been meaning to follow up on recommended dental care, take a look at your health FSA balance and plan deadlines before the end-of-year rush in your own calendar. Eligible dental expenses may qualify for reimbursement.

Ask your plan administrator when care must be received, when claims must be submitted, and whether your plan has a carryover or grace period. Don’t assume every FSA follows the same dates.

Fall check-in: how long has that toothbrush been sitting by your sink? 🪥

If it’s been a few months, take a closer look. The ADA’s advice is to replace your brush around the 3–4 month mark—or earlier when the bristles start to fray.

Those bent, spread-out bristles don’t clean as well as they used to. When it’s time for a replacement, choose soft bristles and keep your touch gentle.

September may be winding down, but caring for your gums is a year-round habit. ✨

As National Gum Care Month comes to a close, remember that gum health is connected with the health of the rest of your body.

Growing research points to a link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease. Scientists are exploring how bacteria from the mouth and inflammation may affect blood vessels. There’s still more to learn about cause and effect, but the connection deserves attention.

There’s also a two-way relationship with diabetes: it raises gum-disease risk, and gum disease may make blood sugar harder to manage for people with diabetes.

So what can you do for your gums today? Keep it consistent: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth each day, and keep the dental visits recommended for you.

Why would a tooth need a crown instead of just a filling? 🦷

Sometimes there simply isn’t enough strong, healthy tooth structure left for a filling to provide the support the tooth needs. A crown covers the prepared tooth to restore its shape, strength, and everyday function.

Crowns may be used for teeth that are cracked or broken, weakened by a large filling, badly worn, or restored after root canal treatment.

And today’s crowns aren’t just strong—they can also be made to look remarkably natural, helping the repaired tooth blend right in with your smile.

Ever listened to your hygienist call out numbers while checking your gums with a small probe and wondered what they're measuring?

Think of that probe as a tiny ruler. It checks the depth of the space alongside each tooth, measuring from the edge of the gum to the bottom of the space in millimeters.

The usual healthy range is 1–3 mm. A reading of 4 mm or more means the space is deeper and needs a closer look. Deeper pockets can hold bacteria below the gumline and may be a sign of gum disease.

Your dental team considers those readings along with bleeding, gum recession, and the support around your teeth. One number by itself doesn't tell us which treatment you need.

For National Gum Care Month, Longbranch Dental Center is making this familiar part of a checkup easier to understand. At your next visit, ask your hygienist to point out any areas that need extra attention.
