Most people think breathing is all about getting more oxygen. 👀

But breathing is really about balance.

Your body also relies on carbon dioxide to help oxygen get where it needs to go. That's one of the many reasons how you breathe matters just as much as how much you breathe.

It's another reminder that our bodies are beautifully connected, and why airway-focused dentistry looks beyond the teeth to better understand the whole picture. 💙

Your body breathes for you about 20,000 times every day without you ever thinking about it. 👀

But breathing is unique. It's one of the only automatic functions you can consciously change. You can choose to slow it down, speed it up, or change how you breathe.

At SOMA, we pay attention to breathing because it can reveal so much about your airway, sleep quality, and overall health. Sometimes the smallest habit can tell the biggest story.

🌿 Curious what your breathing may be telling us? We'd love to help. Call us today to learn more!

Mouth breathing isn’t always a habit. Sometimes, it’s a compensation.

When a child can’t move air comfortably through the nose, the body finds another way. The mouth opens to help them breathe.

The important question isn’t simply, “How do we get them to close their mouth?”

It’s “Why can’t they breathe comfortably through their nose?”

Chronic nasal congestion, enlarged adenoids, allergies, inflammation, and other airway concerns can all contribute to mouth breathing.

And when it becomes a pattern, it can affect sleep, oral function, facial development, and how a child feels throughout the day.

At SOMA, we look beyond the open mouth to understand what may be driving it.

Don’t just treat the sign. Look for the cause.

A cavity is important.
A worn tooth is important.
Jaw pain is important.

But to us, the bigger question is always why?

Our goal isn't simply to treat what's in front of us. It's to understand what's contributing to it in the first place. That's why we take a whole-body approach to dentistry and look beyond the surface.

If you're looking for care that asks better questions, we'd love to meet you. Schedule your visit today!💙

Your child can spend 10 hours in bed and still wake up tired. 💤

Because healthy sleep isn’t only about how long they sleep. It’s also about how well they breathe while they sleep.

Mouth breathing, restless sleep, snoring, frequent waking, dark circles, and difficult mornings can be signs that your child isn’t getting the restorative sleep their body needs.

When breathing is disrupted throughout the night, those effects can follow them into the day, showing up as low energy, difficulty concentrating, mood changes, and more.

At SOMA, we look beyond the symptoms to understand why your child may not be sleeping or breathing well.

If your child consistently wakes up tired, sleeps with their mouth open, or never seems fully rested, it may be time to take a closer look.

Your child's midface does more than shape their smile.

It creates the space needed for healthy breathing, quality sleep, proper jaw development, and a well-functioning airway.

When the midface doesn't develop as intended, it can contribute to mouth breathing, crowded teeth, snoring, restless sleep, and other airway-related concerns.

The good news? Early evaluation can make a meaningful difference.

At SOMA, we look beyond the teeth to understand how facial growth, breathing, sleep, and oral function are connected. By identifying concerns early, we can help guide healthy development and create personalized treatment plans when needed.

Can mouth taping improve your breathing?

You've probably seen mouth tape all over social media. The idea is simple: keep your mouth closed during sleep to encourage nasal breathing.

And yes, nasal breathing is important. It filters, warms, and humidifies the air before it reaches your lungs.

But here's what often gets missed:

Mouth taping does **not** address *why* someone is breathing through their mouth in the first place.

Many people breathe through their mouth because of an underlying issue such as allergies, a deviated septum, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, or other airway restrictions.

In those cases, closing the mouth doesn't solve the problem. It may even mask an important sign that the airway needs to be evaluated.

For children, this is especially important.

If your child sleeps with their mouth open, snores, or has restless sleep, the question isn't:

*"How can I make them breathe through their nose?"*

It's:

**"Why can't they breathe through their nose?"**

Finding that answer is what leads to the right treatment and supports healthy growth, sleep, and development.

At SOMA, we take a comprehensive approach to airway health by evaluating breathing, sleep, oral function, and facial development to identify the root cause, not just the symptom.

If you or your child struggles with mouth breathing, schedule an airway evaluation with our team.

👃Nasal breathing isn't just about getting air into the lungs.

It's a key part of healthy facial growth, quality sleep, oral function, and your child's overall development.

When mouth breathing becomes the norm, the body adapts. Over time, this can contribute to:
• Forward head posture
• A longer, narrower face
• Dark circles under the eyes
• Lips that stay open at rest
• Bite changes, including an open bite
• Inefficient chewing and swallowing
• Snoring and restless sleep
• Difficulty with focus and learning

Mouth breathing is not something children simply "grow out of." It's often a sign that the airway or oral function deserves a closer look.

Common causes include allergies, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, structural airway restrictions, and orofacial dysfunction. That's why a comprehensive evaluation is so important.

At SOMA, we take a collaborative, root-cause approach to airway health. By evaluating breathing, oral function, facial growth, and sleep together, we can help guide healthy development before small concerns become lifelong challenges.

Healthy breathing supports healthy growth.

⚠️ Mouth taping is everywhere right now... but is it right for you?

The goal behind mouth taping makes sense. Nasal breathing supports better sleep, healthier oral function, and overall well-being.

But there's one important question to ask before reaching for the tape:

**Can you actually breathe well through your nose?**

If mouth breathing is caused by allergies, a deviated septum, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, or another airway restriction, mouth taping won't fix the underlying issue. In some cases, it may even make breathing more difficult during sleep.

That's why it's important to understand *why* you're breathing through your mouth before trying to change it.

At SOMA, we don't just look at symptoms. We evaluate your airway, breathing patterns, oral function, and sleep health to identify the root cause and recommend the safest, most effective treatment for you or your child.

Thinking about trying mouth taping? Start with an airway evaluation and make sure your nose is ready before your mouth is taped.
