Crowded or overlapping teeth, large spaces, teeth that stick out, early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty biting or
chewing, mouth breathing, jaw shifting, or a bite that does not meet evenly can all be reasons to schedule an
orthodontic evaluation. Some concerns are easy to see; others are not. An exam is the best way to understand
what is happening and whether treatment would help.

You do not have to wait until all the baby teeth are gone. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends
an orthodontic checkup by age 7. At that age, an orthodontist can evaluate how the teeth and jaws are developing,
identify concerns early and tell you whether treatment is needed now or simply monitored. Many children will not
need immediate treatment—but an early baseline can make future decisions clearer.
