How fluoride protects a child’s teeth from the very start.
When infants are born, their baby (primary) teeth are already present in their jaws. Even before teeth break through the gums, they benefit from fluoride in the food and drink a child takes in. These early doses of fluoride strengthen the enamel on baby teeth, making them more resistant to cavities.
As a child’s primary teeth come in, fluoride helps rebuild any damage that happens when cavity-causing bacteria release acids in the mouth. This is why it’s important for children to use fluoride toothpaste and drink plenty of tap water, which usually contains fluoride.
Using fluoride toothpaste or getting a special fluoride treatment at the dentist’s office puts fluoride on the surface of a child’s teeth, creating a topical benefit. Also, the fluoride children get from foods and drinks becomes part of their saliva, bathing their teeth in tiny amounts of fluoride that help keep enamel strong and healthy.

Tooth enamel is the hardest biological substance in the human body. This may come as a surprise since one in five Americans has one or more untreated cavities, but enamel is the strongest biological substance in your body. However, enamel is brittle and can be damaged if you’re not careful.

Water flossing is a way to clean between and around your teeth. A water flosser is a handheld device that sprays streams of water in steady pulses. The water, like traditional floss, removes food from between teeth.
Water flossers that have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance have been tested to be safe and effective at removing a sticky film called plaque, which increases your risk of cavities and gum disease. Water flossers with the ADA Seal can also help reduce gingivitis, the early form of gum disease, throughout your mouth and between your teeth.
Water flossers can be an option for people who have trouble flossing by hand. People who have had dental work that makes flossing difficult—such as braces or permanent or fixed bridges—might also try water flossers.
Cleaning between your teeth once a day is an important part of your dental hygiene routine. You should also brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes and see your dentist regularly.

Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues surrounding your teeth caused by plaque buildup. In its early stages, symptoms may include:
• gums that bleed easily
• red, swollen, tender gums
• bad breath
Some factors that can put you at higher risk of developing gingivitis include:
• poor dental care
• smoking or chewing to***co
• genetics
• crooked teeth that are hard to keep clean
• pregnancy
• diabetes
• medications, including steroids, certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers, and oral contraceptives
This might sound scary, but the disease is still reversible at this stage. Eliminating the infection can be as simple as a trip to the dentist's office for a professional cleaning, along with daily brushing and flossing.
Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. This is why it's important to schedule regular dental checkups and maintain a good dental routine of brushing and flossing.

Implants
If you are self-conscious about missing teeth, wear dentures that are uncomfortable, or don't want to have healthy tooth structure removed to make a bridge, talk to your dentist to see if dental implants are an option for you.
Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile. The development and use of implants are among the most significant advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. Dental implants are made of titanium and other materials compatible with the human body.
Most patients find that a dental implant is secure, stable, and a suitable replacement for their tooth.

Heading off to college or university is a very exciting time.

Focusing on school is the priority, but you are also learning to balance life, work, and your course load while managing your health and home. For many, this is when oral health problems first arise. As a student, you are facing many unique challenges that can affect your oral health:

Home care – pulling all-nighters to study or staying up late simply because you can is the norm. No matter the reason, it’s still important to brush twice daily for two minutes and to floss daily. Electric toothbrushes that have a timer are great tools to invest in.

Diet – While energy drinks may offer a caffeine jolt, they also contain citric acid, which strips enamel off the teeth. Avoiding these drinks is best for preserving dental health. Late-night snacking is also a crime many students are guilty of; falling asleep without brushing your teeth means the sugars and acids in your late-night snack have all night to eat away at your enamel.

Stress – Getting A’s across the board isn’t easy. The pressure to make the grade and sleep deprivation from studying can show on one’s teeth due to grinding and clenching. Making sleep 8 hours a night and exercise 30 minutes a day a priority will help college students manage stress more productively.

Alcohol consumption – Many alcoholic beverages are very high in sugar and, when mixed with juice or soda, become highly acidic, which can wreak havoc on tooth enamel. College students may also notice increased teeth staining due to increased consumption of certain alcoholic beverages, such as red wine.

Don’t forget your dental cleaning appointment during your summer and Christmas breaks.

So, what is a fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a concentrated form of fluoride painted onto a patient’s teeth. The varnish is not a permanent layer—it stays on a patient’s teeth for several hours, allowing the fluoride to seep into the enamel and strengthen the teeth.
Fluoride varnish is a mineral that can strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent tooth decay. However, keep in mind that fluoride varnish treatments cannot completely prevent tooth decay.
