When a tooth is missing, the jawbone underneath stops getting the stimulation it needs and starts to shrink. Most of that loss happens in the first 18 months after a tooth comes out. Bone grafting is the procedure that rebuilds the foundation so a dental implant has stable, healthy bone to anchor into.

Whether it's a small graft for a single implant or a more involved reconstruction, the goal is the same: a result that lasts.

It's a question we hear often, and we think it deserves a straight answer.

For most patients, yes. Dental implants are the most durable, naturally functioning tooth replacement option available. They preserve the jawbone where your tooth was lost, leave your surrounding healthy teeth untouched, and restore full chewing function in a way that feels completely natural. With proper care, the implant post is designed to last 20 years or more.

That said, the right choice is always a personal one. Your bone health, medical history, and long-term goals all factor into whether implants are the best fit for you. Our team takes the time to evaluate all of that before we recommend a treatment plan.

We serve patients across West Michigan from our Grand Rapids and Rockford offices, and we're here to help you make the decision that's right for your smile.

Get to know Dr. Christopher Bulcher! He brings a comprehensive skill set to our team, holding both a dental degree (DMD) and a medical degree (MD), and completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University.

He's certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the highest credential in the specialty, meaning every patient he sees is being cared for by a surgeon who's met the most rigorous standards in the country.

Dr. Bulcher's approach to patient care is centered on streamlined communication and collaboration with the entire care team, taking the time to plan, align goals, and customize treatment so every patient has a positive experience. Outside the office, he'd be a fine furniture maker if he weren't a surgeon, dreams of scuba-diving with whale sharks in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, and could eat ramen any day of the week. 🍜

Every patient who walks into our office should know what to expect from us. That's why we built our practice on five core values: professionalism, compassion, safety, value, and accessibility. They guide how we plan procedures, how we communicate with referring dentists, and how we show up for the families that trust us.

Which of those matters most to you when choosing a healthcare provider? We'd love to hear in the comments.

When patients take the time to share their experience, we listen. Reviews like this one keep us focused on what matters: clear communication, careful follow-up, and care that lives up to the promise we make at the consult.

"I had been postponing my wisdom tooth removal since I was 16 years old, and now at 23, severe pain finally pushed me to go through with it. I was referred to the Center for Oral Surgery, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

From the moment I arrived, the nurse (or assistant not sure) made me feel so comfortable and truly cared for my well-being. They were patient, kind, and reassuring during a time when I was extremely nervous.

Dr. Christopher M. Bulcher is without a doubt the best surgeon/dentist who has ever treated me. He explained everything clearly, made sure I felt safe, and carried out the procedure with such professionalism and compassion. His patience and expertise gave me full confidence that I was in the best hands possible.

What I had been dreading for years turned out to be a smooth, positive experience thanks to this amazing team. I am beyond grateful and would recommend Dr. Bulcher and the staff at Center for Oral Surgery to anyone in need of oral surgery."

For more than four decades, our practice has been consistently doing one thing: caring for West Michigan smiles. What started as Palm & Panek Oral Surgery in 1981 has grown into the Center for Oral Surgery + Dental Implants: a women-owned practice with two offices, four surgeons, and a team that takes the long view on every patient who walks through the door.

A lot has changed in oral surgery since 1981. What hasn't changed? Our commitment to patients who trust us with their care.

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common procedures we do, and recovery is more predictable than people think. Here's the general roadmap most patients follow:

🦷 Day 1: Rest, ice on and off, soft foods only, no straws.
🦷 Days 2–3: Swelling tends to peak, then gradually goes down. Keep up the ice and soft foods.
🦷 Days 4–5: Most patients feel significantly better and start resuming normal activities.

Your surgeon will give you instructions specific to your procedure — those always come first. We're here for questions every step of the way.

If you've been through it, what was your go-to soft food during recovery? Drop it in the comments to help anyone with surgery on their summer calendar. 🍦🥣

Referring a patient is just the start of the conversation. Our doctors welcome direct calls from referring dentists, whether it's a quick question on a complex case, a CBCT review, or a treatment-planning chat before the patient even walks in. We make every effort to keep your patients with you for their restorative work, and we'll loop you in along the way.

Dentists, what's the one thing you wish more specialists did when you sent a referral? Drop it in the comments, we're listening.

Recently, Dr. Noordhoek and Dr. Van Heukelom were invited to a specialized training session by KLS Martin, focused on IPS® Preprosthetic, an FDA-cleared, patient-specific implant system designed for people who've been told they don't have enough bone for traditional dental implants.

Some patients have lived with severe bone loss, prior jaw reconstruction, or facial trauma, and felt out of options. Advances like this are the reason we keep investing in our surgeons' training: more techniques, more knowledge, more ways to advocate for our patients and the people who refer them.

Continuing education isn't optional for our team. It's the standard.
