A Marpe is a device used to expand a narrow upper jaw. It is typically used when a traditional expander cannot be used. That is usually when a patient is over the age of 13. Marpes in adults can be used as an alternative to surgery and they are sometimes a better alternative to surgery and sometimes they are not. It depends on the person. They are a cheaper alternative though than surgery and don’t have the same complications as surgery. In our office, we typically only use them in conjunction when a patient with a bite issue. They are effective for treating some medical conditions, such as sleep apnea, but not always.
