Being completely positive about the identity of a deceased person is very important for any Coroner’s Office. Most situations are not difficult since there are family members available, photos to compare and circumstances that match up. However, in some instances we must resort to other means. For example my office this past week has been helping with the investigation of someone that was involved in a car fire in which the body was extensively burned resulting in no remaining identifying features. There a few methods to try and identify a body in this condition. The most easiest method and the one I prefer is by dental x-ray comparison. If there is information of who the person could be and you can track down a dentist that person has seen, you can get previous x-rays from that dental office and compare them to the deceased person’s dental x-rays. This is a very reliable method. Each person has unique teeth structure and many people also have filings in their teeth from previous cavities. Each filling has its own special shape, size and other characteristics. Comparing the filings and other teeth characteristics can get you a positive identification in these types of situations. The arrow in the skull x-ray with this post is pointing to some fillings which are the dense white areas. Notice the curves and dips in those fillings. You can see if they match up to the deceased person’s fillings and if they do, you have a positive identification! Cases posing challenges with identification can be frustrating but ultimately rewarding with some hard work and if items such as previous dental x-rays can be found!
