Signs of dentists saving the day for malinia!

Neanderthals used stone tools to treat cavities nearly 59,000 years ago, according to a newly studied tooth discovered in Siberia.

Scientists found a Neanderthal molar with a deep drilled hole reaching the pulp — the inner tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. Microscopic analysis revealed scratch patterns consistent with intentional drilling using a sharp stone tool, likely to remove infected tissue and relieve severe tooth pain.

The tooth also showed signs of healing and continued use afterward, suggesting the individual survived the procedure.

Researchers additionally found grooves linked to toothpick use, indicating Neanderthals may have cleaned their teeth long before modern dentistry existed.

This could represent the oldest known evidence of complex dental treatment in human history.

How to make the most of National Dental Care Month:

Schedule a Check-Up: If it’s been more than six months, use this month to book your routine cleaning.

Audit Your Routine: Ensure you're following the 2-2-2 rule: brush 2 times a day for 2 minutes each, and see a dentist 2 times a year.

Replace Your Toothbrush: A fresh brush (or a new head for your electric one) every three months is recommended for effective cleaning.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the need for early detection of cancers in the mouth, tongue, and throat to improve survival rates. Often caused by to***co, alcohol, or HPV, these cancers are frequently discovered late, making annual screenings by dental professionals vital!

Oral and pharyngeal cancer (cancer of the mouth and upper throat) collectively kills nearly one person every hour of every day of the year. Of the people newly diagnosed with these cancers, only about 60% will live longer

The History of the Holiday:

The Man Behind the Day: St. Patrick was a fifth-century missionary born in Roman Britain. At age 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and enslaved in Ireland for six years as a shepherd. He later escaped but returned to Ireland as a priest to spread Christianity.
A Religious Origin: Originally a solemn Catholic feast day, it was observed with church services and a reprieve from Lenten restrictions on eating meat and drinking.
An American Influence: Many modern secular traditions, including parades, began in North America with Irish immigrants in the 17th and 18th centuries. The first recorded parade actually took place in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1601.
