After dental school, pediatric dentists complete additional specialty training focused specifically on caring for infants, children, and adolescents.

The Worst Reward After a Dental Visit

Your child was brave at the dentist. They deserve a reward, but it doesn't have to be candy. šŸ­
Giving a lollipop or another sugary treat right after a dental appointment sends a confusing message, especially when we're teaching kids how to protect their teeth.
Instead, try a small toy, sticker, coloring page, or another little reward they enjoy.
It's a simple switch that helps build a positive relationship with dental visits without making sugar part of the celebration.
Healthy habits start with the little choices we make every day.

When most parents bring their child to the dentist, they expect us to look for cavities.
But one of the first things I look at isn't the teethā€”it's the child's face and airway.
Dark circles under the eyes, an open-mouth posture, or certain facial growth patterns can sometimes be signs that deserve a closer look. During every exam, I evaluate more than just teeth. I also assess your child's oral development, airway, and other factors that may affect breathing, sleep, and overall health.

Why Does Your Child Grind Their Teeth at Night?

If your child grinds their teeth at night, don't automatically assume it's just a habit.
During a dental exam, signs like tooth wear, enlarged tonsils, a high palate, tongue position, and certain facial growth patterns can prompt us to look more closely at your child's airway and sleep health.
Teeth grinding can have many causes, so it doesn't automatically mean your child has an airway problem. But when it's combined with mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, or other symptoms, it may be worth further evaluation.

After many years as a pediatric dentist, I still hear the same myths from caring, intelligent parents who truly want the best for their children.

Iā€™m Dr. Olga Dolghier, a board-certified pediatric dentist and laser dentist at Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. In this video, I break down 11 of the most common myths about childrenā€™s teeth, cavities, fluoride, braces, thumb sucking, dental visits, and brushing.
