10 Pediatric Dentist Myths Parents Still Believe

After many years as a pediatric dentist, I still hear the same myths from caring, intelligent parents who truly want the best for their children.

I’m Dr. Olga Dolghier, a board-certified pediatric dentist and laser dentist at Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics. In this video, I break down 11 of the most common myths about children’s teeth, cavities, fluoride, braces, thumb sucking, dental visits, and brushing.

Some of these beliefs seem harmless, but they can lead to infections, loss of space for permanent teeth, more complicated orthodontic treatment, and dental problems that could have been prevented much earlier.

In this video, you’ll learn:
• why baby teeth matter much more than parents think
• why cavities are not caused by candy alone
• how frequent snacking affects your child’s teeth
• why crooked teeth do not always correct themselves
• what parents should know about fluoride
• why children should see a dentist by age one
• how thumb sucking changes the jaw and bite
• why a tooth can have a cavity without hurting
• whether natural and organic toothpaste actually works
• why braces are about function, not only appearance
• when children can brush their teeth independently
• why parents should never scare children with “the shot”

My goal is not to make parents feel guilty. My goal is to help you understand what actually protects your child’s health and prevents more difficult treatment later.

Please listen to qualified professionals, ask questions, and remember that every child has a different level of dental risk.

If you need a second opinion or want your child evaluated, you are always welcome at Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics.

Tell me in the comments: which dental myth did you believe before watching this video?

Why Pediatric Dentists Look Beyond the Teeth

When most parents bring their child to the dentist, they expect us to look for cavities.
But one of the first things I look at isn't the teeth—it's the child's face and airway.
Dark circles under the eyes, an open-mouth posture, or certain facial growth patterns can sometimes be signs that deserve a closer look. During every exam, I evaluate more than just teeth. I also assess your child's oral development, airway, and other factors that may affect breathing, sleep, and overall health.
Early recognition can make an important difference.
At Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry, we're committed to caring for the whole child—not just their smile.

One Car Accident Could Cost You Everything

Most people think their auto insurance is enough to protect their assets.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

In this example, an 85-year-old woman was involved in a car accident. After the claim exceeded her insurance limits, her personal assets—including a substantial investment account—became vulnerable to a lawsuit.

The lesson isn't about avoiding accidents. It's about understanding asset protection before something unexpected happens.

Proper legal structures, when established in advance and in compliance with applicable laws, can help reduce personal liability and protect certain assets from future claims.

The best time to think about asset protection is before you ever need it.

Why Wealthy Families Buy Life Insurance Early

When is the best time to think about life insurance? Often, it's earlier than people realize.
Age and health can significantly affect eligibility and premiums, which is why some families explore permanent life insurance strategies while their children are still young.
In this example, a policy was structured for a six-year-old with the goal of building substantial long-term value by adulthood. However, results depend heavily on the type of policy, premiums, fees, guarantees, and non-guaranteed assumptions.
Life insurance can be one part of a broader financial strategy—but it's important to understand exactly how the policy works before making a long-term commitment.

Your Child Hit Their Tooth—Now What?

Kids fall. It happens.

But if your child's tooth turns gray or black after an injury, don't ignore it.

A dark tooth can be a sign that the dental pulp (the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth) has been damaged by the impact. Sometimes the tooth remains healthy, but in other cases it may require monitoring or treatment.

The sooner a pediatric dentist evaluates the injury, the better the chances of preventing complications and protecting your child's smile.

If your child has experienced a dental injury, schedule an exam—even if they aren't complaining of pain.

Should You Pay Off Your Mortgage Early?

Should you invest your money or pay off your mortgage?
Mathematically, if your mortgage has a very low interest rate, investing the money may produce a higher long-term return. But personal finance isn't just about spreadsheets.
In this story, a client chose to pay off her home because the peace of mind was worth more to her than the potential investment gains.
The best financial plan isn't always the one with the highest projected return—it's the one that aligns with your goals, your risk tolerance, and what helps you sleep well at night.
A good financial strategy balances both numbers and human behavior.

Dentistry Is More Than Just Teeth

One of the biggest misconceptions in healthcare is that dentists aren't "real doctors."
The reality is that becoming a dentist requires years of intensive education and clinical training. Dentists are highly trained healthcare professionals who diagnose, prevent, and treat conditions affecting the mouth, teeth, and surrounding structures.
Oral health is closely connected to overall health, making dentistry an essential part of comprehensive patient care.
Understanding the education and expertise behind the profession helps patients appreciate the important role dentists play in keeping families healthy.
