FAQ: Does my child need a palatal expander? 🤔

The AAO recommends every child see an orthodontist by age 7. This is the "sweet spot" to catch skeletal issues like crossbites before they affect permanent jaw development.

The 30-Second At-Home Check:

Grab a flashlight and gently pull your child’s cheek back to view the back teeth. Ask them to bite so the teeth are together.

Compare what you see to the photo:

🔴 CROSS BITE (Left): Notice if the back upper teeth are "tucked inside" the lower teeth. Even one tooth in crossbite can be a problem. Your child will likely need an expander.

🟢 NORMAL (Right): Notice the correct overlap where the upper back teeth sit slightly outside the lower ones.

Why fix it now?
If you see a crossbite on one or both sides, correcting it early with an expander ensures the upper jaw grows wide enough for permanent teeth to fit properly. It also prevents the jaw from shifting to one side as it develops, which can cause permanent asymmetry of the jaws and face and more difficult treatment in years to come.
