Dry mouth might seem harmless but it is something you definitely want to address.
Without enough saliva, you’re at risk of:
* Tooth decay: Saliva fights plaque and cavities. Lack of it causes rapid decay.
* Gum disease: Harmful bacteria build up easily, irritating gums.
* Infections: A dry environment encourages oral thrush and sores.
* Eating and speaking issues: Dryness can make chewing, swallowing, and talking painful or difficult.
Here are a few tips to manage and relieve dry mouth:
* Hydrate often: Sip water or sugarless drinks throughout the day and keep water by your bed at night.
* Stimulate saliva: Chew sugar free gum, ideally containing xylitol to protect teeth.
* Use a humidifier: Run a humidifier at night to add moisture to the air and prevent nighttime dryness.
* Protect your teeth: Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, use a fluoride rinse, and visit your dentist regularly.
