“Are you starting to see the vision I had for you??” - I asked my patient this question yesterday. I started this patient’s treatment about 5-6 months ago. He had A LOT of crowding, overlapped teeth, and anterior crossbites. I told the patient every caveat about orthodontic treatment - you need to brush for optimal results, you need to floss, you need to show up to all your appointments, don’t break brackets; and if you help me, I really think we can get the smile of your dreams together without taking out any teeth.

And he LISTENED!

I saw him at his appointment yesterday and couldn’t believe the progress we’d already achieved! Most of the crowding had been resolved already and we just had some few more teeth to put in place before we were smooth sailing. (I’ve been working on being less surprised when I see my patient’s progress - I know I should expect it at this point but it still doesn’t get old to see it!) We do still have a lot of work to go for his treatment but the smile he gave me and his answer of “yes, I do see the vision” truly made my day ❤️

🦷 Broken Brackets & Wires: Why They Matter 🦷

If you’re on a journey to a straighter smile, keeping your braces intact is 🔑 to staying on track! 🚨 Here’s why broken brackets and wires can slow down your treatment:

⭐️ Delayed Progress: When brackets or wires are damaged, teeth can move freely and in often wrong directions, meaning they don’t move as planned. This can add weeks or even months to your treatment time! ⏳

💜 Tooth Damage: Broken wires can poke or irritate the inside of your mouth, causing discomfort and even sores. Damaged brackets can also make teeth shift in the wrong direction, leading to complications or even extra treatment down the road. 😬

🦷 Increased Risk of Decay: Damaged braces can make it harder to clean your teeth properly, leading to plaque buildup, cavities, or gum problems. Keeping everything intact ensures your smile stays healthy throughout treatment! 🪥✨

😱😫🫣 MY ORTHO TIGHTENED MY BRACES!!! 😫😫🫣🫠😱

I feel like the worst person in the room whenever I hear this 🤣🥲 and then parents tell me “Make sure you tighten their braces really good this time!!” or “Are you going to crank their braces today?!”

Did you know there’s often not an actual “tightening” that’s going on? Most often, a painful ortho appt results from a wire change occurring. That thicker wire puts a bit more force on the teeth and makes it a bit more painful. It could be an adjustment to the wire, a chain was used, or perhaps the tooth was tied more securely to the wire. After all these years though, I’ve just given up and say “Yes…it will be tightened” 😂 after all, it’s what we’ve come to expect with braces. And funny enough, I’ve had parents get upset when their kids told them their braces didn’t hurt 😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣 Tell me 👇🏼 below, did your braces hurt 😢
