Betty Howard, RDH ’83, has dedicated her career to advancing the dental hygiene profession. She served on the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners becoming the first hygienist to preside as Chair of the Dental Board. Betty has been an examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA), formerly known as NERB, for 21 years. She was selected by the University of Maryland School of Dentistry Alumni Board as the 2012 recipient of the Linda DeVore Dental Hygiene Alumnus Award for her record of exceptional work experience and activism within the profession. She gives back to the Hygiene program in order to help maintain the quality of dental hygiene education that she experienced as a student: “Maryland School of Dentistry's dental hygiene program gave me an excellent foundation upon which to build my career. The faculty was a very enthusiastic and motivated group demonstrating their commitment to dental hygiene. Our professors challenged all of us to search for excellence and perhaps become more than just a clinician.” .
