Pacifiers can help soothe infants, but long-term use may affect the normal growth and development of the jaws and teeth. Constant sucking pressure over time can contribute to problems such as an anterior open bite, increased overjet, crossbite, and tooth misalignment.

The longer and more frequently a child uses a pacifier, the greater the risk of developing these changes. In many cases, stopping the habit early allows the teeth and jaws to return toward more normal development. However, continued use beyond the preschool years may increase the likelihood of needing orthodontic treatment later.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends gradually discontinuing pacifier use as children grow, particularly beyond age 3.

Flight attendants and pilots are more likely to die of radiation-related cancers than workers in over 500 other occupations in the US, according to a study published yesterday. Researchers say the finding is likely linked, in part, to cosmic radiation.

Commercial planes typically cruise above 30,000 feet, where a thinner atmosphere offers less protection from high-energy particles from the sun and space (watch explainer). This radiation can damage DNA and increase the risk of certain cancers, such as leukemia and breast cancer. The study revealed that nearly 7% of flight attendants and pilots died from radiation-related cancers—more than nuclear technologists, whose workplace radiation exposure is monitored and limited. US aircrew are not subject to federal radiation limits or monitoring requirements.
