Thirty years ago this week I received my Doctorate of Dental Medicine Degree from Temple University School of Dentistry as Valedictorian of the Class of 1996. At that time, it was the greatest accolade I had ever received. Sheer grit, determination and sacrifice got me there. The culmination of a lifetime of young dreams was now written in fancy calligraphy on a formidable piece of parchment worth framing.
What thirty years of treating patients has taught me is that the greatest accolades are not neatly framed and hung on a wall. They are found in countless photographs of graduations, weddings and birthdays. They are found in a child’s laugh. They are found in an athlete’s grin. They are found in a grandmother’s smile. They are found in the faces of the all of the patients I have treated over these past three decades. I KNOW that my greatest accomplishments are smiling right back at ME in the lives I have touched…& in the people I care for with compassion.
