If your prosthesis or orthosis feels different from day to day, you’re not imagining it.

Here are some common reasons:
▪️Changes in swelling or limb volume
▪️Activity level
▪️ Weather
▪️ Small fit or alignment changes

Even healthy bodies fluctuate, and your body responds to that. If the difference is consistent or uncomfortable, it might be time for an adjustment. We’re here to help. https://ow.ly/4SUT50ZnZac

If it seems like your prosthesis will never feel “natural,” you’re not alone.

Adjusting to a prosthetic device takes time, and no two people or circumstances are identical. “Natural” looks different for everyone, but with practice (and the right fit), improvement DOES happen. Here’s what helps:
▪️A proper fit and alignment
▪️Physical therapy and practice
▪️A care team you trust

One of the questions we hear often is: “How long does an orthosis last?”

The answer depends on a few factors, but most orthoses can last 3-5+ years with normal use.
Here are a few things that can impact the timeline:

▪️ Smaller components like straps, padding, joints, and wedges may wear out sooner and need replacing along the way
▪️ The more active your lifestyle, the more demand you place on your device
▪️ Weight fluctuations, swelling, or a new change in condition (like a surgery) can affect fit and may mean adjustments or replacement

As the weather heats up, it’s the perfect time to incorporate movement into your daily routine. Even low-impact activities like walking, stretching, or light strength exercises can help improve your mobility.

Before you get moving, take a moment to make sure your device fits properly and make sure to start slow and build up activity gradually.

Heading into summer usually means switching out your footwear for sandals, flip-flops, or new walking shoes (and probably more time on your feet). If you wear custom orthotic, a change in shoes can impact how your body is supported, which can lead to new aches and fatigue.

If your body feels off after a change in footwear, consider rotating back to supportive, broken-in shoes and checking whether your device still fits your routine and activity level.
