We recently hosted our fourth annual NICU Read-A-Thon as part of Babies with Books, an effort to support babies and their families and help make the NICU experience a little more comforting.

More than 20 families participated, sharing books and special moments with their little ones. This year, the JPS NICU logged 93 total reading sessions.

Reading to babies is not only a special way for parents to spend time with their child, but it also supports early brain development, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Hearing a parent’s voice through reading and conversation helps build language and communication skills while giving families a special way to connect with their baby.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and here is a number worth holding onto: when breast cancer is found at an early, localized stage, the five year relative survival rate is over 99 percent. 🎀

About two thirds of breast cancers are caught at that stage, which is a real testament to what screening and awareness can do. The work now is making sure that number keeps climbing, and that every person who needs a screening is able to get one.

Throughout October, we will be sharing what to watch for, what to ask your provider, and stories from patients in our community. If you are due for a mammogram, our care teams can help you get it scheduled.

Last night, our campus turned into a block party. 💙

The Tarrant County Hospital District Police Department hosted our first National Night Out, bringing team members, patients, families, and community partners together with the officers who serve this campus every day.

The Tarrant County Hospital District Police Department has protected JPS since 1994, and its officers know this place and the people in it. That familiarity is exactly what nights like this are built on. "National Night Out gives us an opportunity to interact with our community and strengthen those relationships in a relaxed, non-enforcement environment," said Danny Webb, Executive Director of Public Safety and Parking Services and Police Chief.

On this we want to highlight our Car Seat Program and everyone who helped make this a success. 💛

Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians met with families one car at a time.

They checked each seat, made sure it was installed and used correctly, and walked parents through the questions that are hard to answer from a manual. Families in need were also able to receive a car seat at no cost.

Your child's safety is always worth a double-check. Thank you to every family who came out, and to the technicians who spent their Saturday helping them drive away with confidence.

For more than 30 years, the Diamond Hill-Jarvis Community Clinic has been part of the neighborhood. 💙

When it opened in 1994, families in Diamond Hill asked for one thing, which was good care close to home. Today, neighbors can come in for checkups, X-rays, lab work, social services, and prescriptions, and many of our team members speak both English and Spanish.

Having a clinic down the street means a sick child can be seen without a long drive across town, and a question about a prescription can be answered in the language you're most comfortable with. That's what a neighborhood clinic is for.
