Unexplained bleeding in the mouth can sometimes be a symptom of oral cancer. Suspicious spots that will not heal or reveal themselves as red or white patches or lumps can also be a sign of an oral pathology. Persistent inexplicable swelling of the gums, lips, or in the mouth can also be oral cancer.

Getting referred to an oral surgeon can be helpful insurance-wise. Many oral surgery procedures qualify for coverage by regular health insurance, instead of dental insurance. Often, regular health insurance coverage pays at a higher rate for oral surgery than dental insurance would.

Oral surgery sometimes becomes necessary for long-term denture wearers. Over time, the supporting bone can deteriorate, causing the dentures to no longer fit properly. An oral surgeon can correct this and even add a bone graft in situations of extreme deterioration.

You should expect some discomfort after having a tooth extracted, and over-the-counter pain medication should help. But if the pain becomes more serious a few days later, and if you develop a slight fever and have an unpleasant taste in your mouth, that could mean you have developed dry socket. Your oral surgeon can treat this condition and manage the pain.

Did you know that having a permanent tooth knocked out doesn’t always mean it’s lost? If you’re able to get to the office quickly enough, it may be possible to reinsert and save your tooth.

We realize that the idea of having surgery in your mouth can be nerve-racking for some people. Perhaps the best way to allay your fears is to ensure you’re working with an oral surgeon as opposed to your regular dentist when you need complicated tooth extractions.

The first reference in ancient documents to a dentist dates back to 2600 B.C. in Egypt. A man named Hesy-Re has an inscription on his tomb that reads: "The greatest of those who deal with teeth, and of physicians."
