Routine prophylaxis (cleaning) removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline; it's maintenance for healthy gums.

Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) goes further below the gumline to remove hardened deposits from the root surfaces and treat active infection. If we recommend a deep cleaning, it's because the regular cleaning won't reach what needs to be addressed.
