Does teeth whitening damage your enamel?

No. Professional whitening used correctly does not damage enamel. The gel lifts stains from within the tooth without stripping or thinning enamel. Trouble comes from misuse, like overusing strips or whitening teeth with untreated cavities or gum problems. We use professional systems such as KoR.

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.

This is a backlit view of thin porcelain veneers before they ever reach the mouth.

What you’re seeing is one of the details that helps porcelain look natural: the way it interacts with light.

Natural teeth aren’t simply one solid shade of white. They have translucency, texture, depth, and subtle variations in color. Well designed porcelain has to recreate those characteristics while also giving us the shape and proportions we planned for the smile.

And when the clinical situation allows, keeping the porcelain thin can be part of a conservative approach that preserves more natural tooth structure.

The goal isn’t to make teeth look like veneers.

By the first birthday. It's mostly about comfort.

When should a child first see a dentist?

By the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing. The early visits are mostly about establishing comfort, guidance on habits, and catching problems while they are small. Starting early is also the most reliable way to prevent dental anxiety later.

Sometimes the bonding comes BEFORE the orthodontics.

This patient had naturally small lateral incisors with significant spacing. Instead of asking orthodontics to close all of the space around undersized teeth, we first used additive composite bonding to establish better tooth size, shape, and proportions.

Why do this first?

Giving the orthodontist teeth that are closer to their ideal dimensions provides a better reference for distributing and closing the remaining spaces. And because we’re using composite, the restorations can still be refined as orthodontic treatment progresses and we get closer to the final tooth positions.

The other part of this case I love is just how natural direct composite bonding can look.

No porcelain. The shape, translucency, surface texture, and line angles were created directly in composite to help the restorations disappear into the natural teeth.

For younger patients, composite can be a conservative way to improve tooth proportions while preserving natural tooth structure. These restorations can potentially serve the patient for years, while still leaving the option for porcelain restorations later in life if they’re ever desired or indicated.

The spaces in the after photo are intentional. This isn’t the end of treatment. It’s planning for the final result.

It's not just stain. The tooth itself changes.

Why do teeth get darker with age?

Enamel thins over the decades and the underlying dentin, which is naturally yellow, both darkens and thickens beneath it. The change is structural rather than accumulated surface stain, which is why over-the-counter whitening products produce steadily diminishing results as people get older.

Before veneers ever make it to this stage, there’s a lot that goes into getting the details right: digital scans, smile design, tooth proportions, shade, texture, translucency, and communication with the ceramic artist.

The goal isn’t simply to make teeth whiter. It’s to create a smile that still looks like teeth.

Natural teeth aren’t one flat shade. They reflect and transmit light differently throughout the tooth, and those subtle variations are a big part of what keeps porcelain from looking opaque or artificial.

Can gaps between your teeth be closed without making your teeth look too big?

Yes—but closing the space is only part of the equation.

When designing a smile, we also have to consider tooth proportions, how the spaces are distributed, tooth position, the bite, and how the final smile fits the patient’s face.

For this patient, the goal was to close the unwanted spaces and improve the proportions while keeping the result natural and individualized. We don’t want every patient’s smile to look the same.

Depending on the smile, options for closing gaps may include cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers, orthodontics, or a combination of treatments.
