Ever wondered why your blood pressure is taken during your dental visit?

Blood Pressure readings are helpful for two main reasons.

First, it's a great way to have your blood pressure checked periodically to ensure it is at a healthy level. Screening for hypertension can be helpful especially because it can often be asymptomatic, making dental visits and opportunity for early detection. If high blood pressure is suspected, it's encouraged to speak with a primary care doctor to discuss ways of bringing it back into a normal and healthy range.

Second, local anesthetics often contain epinephrine which can help the anesthetic last longer; however, it can also raise your blood pressure and heart rate which is why checking patient's baseline blood pressure is very important.
