Overlay Crown aka Crown-lay: from the top it looks like a crown, from the sides it's an onlay. This is made from a high strength glass (GC Initial Lisi) that will wear more gently against her opposing teeth. This enamel bonded biomimetic style is how we do most of the crowns at our office. The higher finish lines make it easier to scan, easier to mill, easier to clean, and easier to retreat if ever needed. Would you rather have the crown last longer or the tooth last longer? We have making these same day crowns like this for 10 years. Many dental emergency cases can be treated start to finish using our proven protocol.

Today's chemistry trivia: Zirconium, as an element, is a transition metal. When combined with oxygen, zirconium oxide is more commonly known as Zirconia, which is considered a ceramic, NOT a metal. You probably first encountered cubic zirconia, which is a common diamond substitute. But if you had a dental crown placed after 2010, there's a 95% chance it's made of zirconia, popularized by Glidewell Dental, based here in Orange County. Gum tissue heals really well around polished zirconia. A few dentists (the holistic/biological ones) also place zirconia implants. Mainstream dentists prefer titanium, it's upstairs neighbor metal on the periodic table. We only place titanium implants, then top them with zirconia crowns.
