Have you noticed that your child's new permanent teeth look a little more yellow than the baby teeth sitting right next to them?

This is actually very common, and there's a good reason for it!

Permanent teeth naturally have a thicker layer of dentin beneath the enamel, which gives them a slightly warmer, more yellow appearance. Baby teeth tend to look much whiter, making the difference especially noticeable when your child has a mix of both.

In most cases, this color difference is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

However, if you notice unusual spots, significant discoloration, or a sudden change in the color of a tooth, it's worth having Dr. Mike take a look.

A quick update for our Sea Smiles families!

Our office will be closed tomorrow, Friday, October 9, and will reopen on Wednesday, October 14, at 8:30 AM.

With the storm approaching, we hope everyone stays safe and takes care over the next few days. We're also wishing all of our Sea Smiles families a wonderful fall break!

A child’s bite can change a lot as they grow.

Baby teeth fall out, adult teeth come in, jaws develop, and spacing can shift from one visit to the next. Watching those changes over time helps Dr. Ashley understand what is developing normally and what may need guidance.

An orthodontic evaluation can give families helpful information about crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and timing. Some children need treatment earlier.

Others simply need monitoring until the right time.

Yes, kids can have gum inflammation too.

Parents may notice gums that look red, puffy, tender, or that bleed during brushing. This can happen when plaque builds up along the gum line, when brushing is rushed, when flossing is inconsistent, or when braces make certain areas harder to clean.

The good news is that gum irritation in kids is often very manageable when it is caught early. A few small changes at home can make a big difference, and a dental visit gives us a chance to see what is going on before it becomes more uncomfortable.

Jaw popping or clicking can happen in older kids and teens, and parents are often not sure whether to worry.

An occasional click without pain may not be urgent, but it is worth mentioning. Jaw discomfort, headaches, trouble chewing, locking, soreness, or frequent popping should be evaluated. Sometimes the bite, clenching, grinding, stress, habits, or jaw joint irritation can play a role.

Dr. Ashley can look at how the bite fits together and ask the right questions about when the popping happens, how often it occurs, and whether there is pain or limited movement.

Flossing needs can change as your child’s mouth grows.

If there are spaces between the teeth, floss may not be needed in every single area yet. Once teeth touch, toothbrush bristles cannot clean well between them, and flossing becomes much more important. This often changes as adult teeth come in and spacing shifts.

Dr. Mike can show you where your child actually needs floss and what method may work best for their age. Some kids do well with traditional floss, while others do better with floss picks and parent help.

If you are unsure whether your child should be flossing yet, ask us at the next visit. We are happy to make it simple.
