White spots on teeth can happen for a few different reasons, and Dr. Mike would rather families ask than sit at home worrying about it.

Sometimes white spots are related to early enamel changes, areas where plaque has been sitting, or changes in how the enamel formed. They can also show up around braces if brushing is not reaching the same spots consistently. The important thing is figuring out what type of white spot it is and whether it needs to be watched, treated, or supported with better home care.

A white spot does not automatically mean there is a cavity, but it can be a sign that the enamel needs attention. That is why regular exams matter. We can check the area, talk through brushing and fluoride support, and make a plan that fits your child.

No, and this is one of the biggest misconceptions about early orthodontic visits.

An early orthodontic check is often about information, not starting treatment right away. Dr. Ashley looks at how the teeth are coming in, how the jaws are growing, how the bite fits together, and whether there are signs that timing may matter later.

Sometimes the answer is, “Everything looks good, and we will keep watching.” Sometimes it means checking again in a few months or a year. And sometimes, if there is a bite issue, crowding, or growth concern, early guidance can make future treatment simpler.

The goal is not to rush your child into braces. The goal is to understand what is happening early enough to make smart decisions.

This is something a lot of parents notice when adult teeth first start coming in.

Baby teeth are usually brighter and whiter, so when an adult tooth comes in next to them, it can look a little darker or more yellow by comparison. In many cases, that color difference is completely normal. Adult teeth have a thicker layer of dentin underneath the enamel, which can naturally make them look warmer in tone.

What we want to watch for is a tooth that looks gray, brown, or significantly different from the others, especially if there has been an injury or your child is having pain.

This is one of those things that can look alarming, but it is actually pretty common.

Sometimes an adult tooth starts coming in behind a baby tooth before the baby tooth has fallen out. You may hear people call this “shark teeth,” and while the name sounds dramatic, it does not always mean something is wrong.

Dr. Mike will usually look at how loose the baby tooth is, where the adult tooth is coming in, how much space there is, and whether the tooth looks like it may move into a better position on its own. In many cases, the baby tooth gets looser and falls out naturally. Other times, we may need to help it along if it is not moving and the adult tooth is already coming in.

If you are seeing a second row of teeth, do not panic. Give the office a call and we can help you decide if it needs a visit or if it is something to watch for a little longer.

Loose baby teeth can feel like they take forever, especially when your child is wiggling it nonstop and you are trying to figure out if it is normal.

Most of the time, the best approach is to let it come out on its own. Gentle wiggling is fine, but pulling can cause extra bleeding, pain, or a little panic that makes the whole thing harder than it needs to be. Crunchy foods like apples can sometimes help naturally, as long as your child is comfortable.

A few reasons to give us a call are if the tooth is causing ongoing pain, the gum looks swollen or irritated, your child is avoiding chewing on that side, or you are seeing the adult tooth coming in behind it and you are not sure what to do next.

Dr. Ashley looks at how the bite fits together, how teeth are coming in, and how growth may affect spacing and alignment over the next few years. Sometimes the best plan is to monitor and recheck at the right time. Sometimes a small step early can help guide growth and prevent bigger issues later.
