We wanted to share a quick update on Franklin.
This post has pictures of Franklin from surgery day till today. So if you do not want to see them, do not scroll past the first picture.
First, the good news — his surgery went as well as it possibly could. It was a major procedure, involving removal of the right side of his upper jaw, so definitely not something small. Because of the size of the tumor, his surgeon wasn’t able to get ideal margins. But the pathology report came back showing clean margins, which we’re really grateful for.
This type of tumor is very invasive, so even one remaining cell could cause it to come back. There’s a 57% chance of recurrence, but we’re choosing to focus on the 43% chance that it won’t.
Franklin has healed incredibly well — honestly, better than we expected. He’s adjusted so well to the changes and is in great spirits. The Franklin we all know and love is back and he’s back to his old shenanigans. The cosmetic outcome is OUTSTANDING. His surgeon is incredibly skilled and once his hair grows back, you would never know he’s missing half his upper jaw.
He started radiation this Wednesday (4/29) and will be going every day through May 26. We’re hopeful this will take care of anything that might be left.
Thank you all so much for the love, support, and positive thoughts. It truly means a lot to us. We’ll keep you posted as he continues on this journey.
