Dental Insurance Series β€” Part 5. 🦷
This one is going to reframe the way you think about dental insurance forever.
Dental insurance was never designed to cover everything.
I know that might sting a little. But hear me out. 🀍
Unlike health insurance β€” which protects you from catastrophic medical costs β€” dental insurance was originally designed as a supplement. A small help. Something to encourage regular visits and catch small problems before they become big expensive ones.
That is why annual maximums are low. That is why waiting periods exist. That is why there are so many exclusions.
It was never meant to be a full coverage safety net. And once you understand that β€” everything starts to make more sense.
So here is what to do about it:
βœ… Use your preventive benefits every single year β€” cleanings, exams, X-rays are usually covered at 100%. Do not waste them.
βœ… Plan major treatment strategically β€” split it across two calendar years to use two annual maximums
βœ… Ask your dental office about payment plans, membership plans, or financing options
βœ… Never let your insurance make your dental health decisions β€” your mouth deserves care based on what it needs. Not what insurance is willing to pay.

Insurance is a tool. A helpful one when you understand it. But it is not the ceiling of the care you deserve. πŸ™ŒπŸ¦·
Save this. This is the mindset shift that changes everything. πŸ‘‡

Dental Insurance Series β€” Part 4. 🦷
Let's talk about deductibles β€” because this word confuses a lot of people and it shouldn't.
A deductible is the amount YOU pay out of pocket before your insurance starts covering your treatment.
Here is what you need to know:

βœ… Dental deductibles are usually low β€” $50 to $150 for an individual
βœ… Preventive care like cleanings and exams is usually exempt β€” no deductible needed
⚠️ Your deductible resets every January 1st β€” just like your annual maximum
⚠️ Family plans have individual AND family deductible limits β€” know both numbers
⚠️ Lower premium = often higher deductible β€” always look at the full picture

Dental insurance is all about understanding the full picture β€” not just the monthly cost.
Save this and share it with someone shopping for a new plan. πŸ‘‡πŸ¦·

Dental Insurance Series β€” Part 3. 🦷
You just got new dental insurance. You are ready to finally take care of that tooth. You book your appointment, sit in the chair β€”
And then you find out your insurance won't cover your treatment yet.
This is called a waiting period. And it catches so many people off guard.

Here is how it typically breaks down:
βœ… Preventive care (cleanings, exams) β€” usually covered immediately
⏳ Basic care (fillings) β€” 3 to 6 month wait
⏳ Major care (crowns, root canals, dentures) β€” 6 to 12 months or longer

So if you know you need major work done soon β€” this needs to be one of the first things you check before choosing a plan.
Ask specifically: what are the waiting periods for the treatment I need? Look for plans with shorter or no waiting periods. They exist. You just have to know to look for them.
Because the last thing you need is to sign up for a plan in January and find out you cannot use it for the treatment you need until July. 😬
Save this. Share it. And never let a waiting period catch you off guard again. πŸ™ŒπŸ¦·

Dental Insurance Series β€” Part 2. 🦷
In-network vs. out-of-network. Sounds simple. It's really not.
And before I get into it β€” if staying in-network is what makes dental care affordable for you and your family, that is a completely valid and smart decision. Working within your budget is always the right call. 🀍
But here is what I want you to know:
βœ… In-network = your dentist has a contract with your insurance, lower out of pocket for you
βœ… Out-of-network = no contract, your insurance may still cover part of the cost but at a lower rate
⚠️ Not all in-network practices offer the same quality of care
⚠️ Not all out-of-network care is as expensive as you think
Insurance should absolutely be a factor when choosing your dentist. But it should never be the ONLY factor.
You deserve a provider you trust. A place where you feel heard, comfortable, and genuinely cared for.
Save this and share it with someone who is shopping for a new dental plan. πŸ‘‡πŸ¦·

Dental insurance series β€” Part 1. 🦷
Let me start with something that surprises almost every patient I talk to β€” the annual maximum.
Your annual maximum is the total amount your dental insurance will pay for your care in a calendar year. Once you reach that number β€” your insurance stops paying. Every dollar after that comes out of your pocket.
The average annual maximum? $1,000 to $1,500.
That number has barely changed since the 1970s. Let that sink in. 😬
A single crown can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $1,800. One procedure. Potentially your entire year's worth of coverage β€” gone.
This is why knowing your annual maximum before choosing a plan is so important. Not all plans are equal. Some offer $1,000. Others offer $5,000 or more. That difference could save you hundreds of dollars out of pocket.
A few things to keep in mind:
βœ… Your maximum resets every January 1st (usually)
βœ… Unused benefits do NOT roll over β€” use them or lose them
βœ… The higher the maximum, the better β€” especially if you need major work

Dental insurance is confusing β€” even for me as a dentist. That's exactly why I started this series. So you can walk into any dental office informed, confident, and never caught off guard by your bill. πŸ™Œ
Save this for future open enrollment season. You are going to need it. πŸ‘‡πŸ¦·

This is what an ideal day at Avalon looks like for me and my team.
Calm. Clear. Focused. Everything going as planned.
Every patient seen on time. Every procedure done with intention. Every team member showing up as their best self β€” not rushed, not scattered, but fully present.
It doesn't always go perfectly β€” because life and dentistry both have a way of surprising you πŸ˜‚ β€” but the intention is always there. The care is always there.
And at the end of the day, we close those doors knowing we gave every single patient our very best.

I always pack light with just 1 carry on and 1 personal item. Here is my must-bring oral hygiene kit as a dentist 🦷🧳
Nimbus toothbrush, Coco Floss, tongue scraper, and CariFree toothpaste in my toiletry bag. Gum Soft-picks and Carifree pH balancing oral spray in my purse for on-the-go moments.
You can take the girl out of the clinic but you can't take the clinic out of the girl. ✨
Your mouth deserves vacation care too β€” not just a random hotel toothbrush and a prayer. πŸ˜‚
What's your non-negotiable travel oral care item? Drop it below! πŸ‘‡

Behind the scenes of our renovation. πŸ¦·πŸŽ‰
This is our 5th operatory coming to life.
From the construction crew breaking down walls to the equipment team carefully designing every inch of the room β€” where the chair goes, where the cabinets land, how everything flows β€” every single decision was intentional.
Because when you are building a space where patients receive care, nothing is random. Nothing is just 'good enough.'
We wanted a room that works beautifully for our team so they can focus on what matters most β€” you. 🀍
It was loud. It was messy.
But watching it come together piece by piece?
So worth it. ✨

A little Avalon milestone moment. 🦷✨
This office was built in the 1990s with 4 operatories. And for a long time, 4 was enough.
But Avalon has grown. Our team has grown. And most importantly β€” the number of patients who trust us with their care has grown.
We now have Dr. Hannah, Dr. Lee, and our incredible hygienists Marie and Julia β€” and some days we even bring in an additional hygienist to meet demand. Four chairs for that many providers and patients? We were making it work. But 'making it work' is not the Avalon standard.
Here's the thing β€” dentistry is unpredictable. Emergencies happen. Some patients need more time. Schedules can run behind. And when that happens in a fully booked 4-op office, the person who feels it most is the next patient waiting for their turn.
That is not okay with us.
So this month we officially opened our 5th operatory. πŸŽ‰
Not to see more patients faster. Not to rush anyone through. But to make sure that when life happens β€” and it will β€” we have the space to handle it gracefully without making YOU wait.

And alongside our new operatory, we also built something we have wanted for a long time β€” a dedicated consultation room. 🀍
Because we know that dental visits are not always just about the procedure. Sometimes you have concerns you want to talk through. Questions you are not sure how to ask. Worries you have been carrying around for a while.
You deserve a quiet, private space to have that conversation β€” away from the clinical noise, away from the busy hallway, away from anything that makes you feel rushed or anxious.
We designed this room to feel calm. Relaxing. Warm. Like a place you can actually exhale and say what's on your mind β€” because your comfort and peace of mind matter just as much as your treatment.
We want you to feel at home at Avalon. Not just welcomed β€” truly at home. 🏑
Because your time matters. Your comfort matters. Your concerns matter. And you deserve a clinic that plans ahead with YOU in mind.
Here's to the next chapter of Avalon. We are just getting started. πŸ™ŒπŸ¦·
