Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation. A full set exposes you to about the same as a short airplane flight. You’re brushing your teeth, you spit out the toothpaste, and there it is: a little pink in the sink. If that sounds familiar, you might feel a flash of worry. Sometimes bleeding gums are no big deal. Other times, they’re a gentle warning sign from your body.

In most cases, bleeding points to early gingivitis, plaque buildup along the gum line causing irritation. The good news is that gingivitis is completely reversible with better daily cleaning and a professional cleaning. But if bleeding lasts longer than two weeks despite good home care, or if you notice red, swollen gums, persistent bad breath, gums pulling away from teeth, or loose teeth, it’s time to call.
