When Kemba Smith was a young college student at Hampton University, her life took a drastic turn. She was born in Richmond, Virginia, came from a good home, and had a strong upbringing. But she found herself in a relationship with a man who later became the focus of a major federal investigation. Although Kemba was not accused of handling anything herself, she was charged under federal conspiracy laws in 1994. At 24 years old, she was sentenced to 24.5 years in prison. Four months before her sentencing, Kemba gave birth to her son William Armani Smith. Her parents, Odessa and Gus Smith, took care of William while she was incarcerated.

After serving about six years, President Bill Clinton commuted her sentence in 2000. Kemba rebuilt her life and refused to be defined by her past. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Virginia Union University and later began speaking at schools, churches, and community events about her experiences. She also created a nonprofit Kemba Smith Foundation to support families impacted by incarceration.

On January 19, 2025, Kemba received a full presidential pardon from President Joe Biden, clearing her record completely. She wrote a memoir titled Poster Child, and her life story was turned into a film called Kemba in 2022. Her journey reminds all of us that people can rise after falling. Everyone deserves a chance to start over.

We are excited to announce that Alliance Family Dental has made it to the next level of voting for Best Dental Clinic through the Fayetteville Community's Choice Awards. We need your help. The next round of voting begins tomorrow and we ask for your support. We have a tough road ahead making it to the next round because our office is small and many of the others in contention are much larger. However, we know that if we band together, anything is possible!
