A Message from MDA President Dr. Steve Meraw on the WHO Statement Issued Aug. 11
Dear MDA Member:
As many of you may have read yesterday, the World Health Organization released a statement indicating that routine dental care should be postponed due to COVID-19.
The Michigan Dental Association respectfully, but strongly, disagrees with the WHO statement, which is based upon opinion and not any new data. The MDA believes that Michigan dentists are essential health care workers, and have been responsibly treating patients within the newest guidelines since May 31 without a reported COVID-19 dental office transmission.
The American Dental Association also disagrees with the WHO recommendation and today issued a statement of the ADA’s position.
“Dentistry is essential health care because of its role in evaluating, diagnosing, preventing, or treating oral diseases, which can affect systemic health,” ADA President Dr. Chad Gehani said in the statement. “Millions of patients have safely visited their dentists in the past few months for the full range of dental services. With appropriate PPE, dental care should continue to be delivered during global pandemics or other disaster situations.”
