It’s Root Canal Awareness Week! Root canals are one of the most successful dental procedures—up to 97% effective—used to save infected or damaged teeth. By removing diseased pulp, cleaning the canals, and sealing them, dentists can preserve natural teeth and prevent further infection. Thanks to modern anesthesia, root canals are generally no more painful than a filling. Over 15 million are performed each year in the United States.
🦷 Core Root Canal Facts
Purpose:
Removes infected or dead nerve tissue, eliminates bacteria, and prevents further infection—saving the natural tooth.
Procedure:
A small hole is drilled, the diseased pulp is removed, and the interior is cleaned, disinfected, shaped, and sealed. This typically takes 1–2 visits.
Pain Level:
Modern root canals are designed to relieve pain, not cause it. With local anesthesia, discomfort is minimal and comparable to a filling.
Lifespan:
With proper dental care, a treated tooth can last a lifetime. A crown is often placed afterward to restore strength and function.
