Our hygienist, Jamie, posted this to her personal page. With her permission we share it here to show why dental x-rays are an important part of your dental care! 🦷

Yesterday I myself was a testament to why we take dental x-rays. This procedure is by far the one we get the most push back on, the one patients hate, the one patients decline, the one they think we take just for money with no real value. We try to explain that without the x-rays we are seeing about 40% of the story or less of what’s really going on in your mouth. People also assume “if there was a major problem, I’d feel pain or see something” let me tell you, this IS NOT always true. I am a dental hygienist and expanded functions dental assistant and have worked in dentistry for 17 years. And I didn’t know. I had a small chip in a tooth that didn’t hurt me AT ALL, and it looked small in the mirror. I put it off. Finally yesterday another small bit broke off so I put myself on the schedule for a filling. Imagine my shock and horror when the X-ray revealed this! Decay and damage TO THE NERVE! I needed a root canal and crown….. for what I thought was a small chip with no pain…. And I am DENTALLY TRAINED! This is why we need X-rays to properly treat you, even though they are gaggy, pinchy, and costly. They are insanely necessary!!!! Without them it’s like driving in the rain with no wipers!

Did you know that baby teeth can grow in upside down, sideways, or backwards? They don’t have the same pattern to follow as adult teeth! That is why baby teeth are so important, they hold the space and light the way for the growing adult teeth to follow so they know where to come in! This is why we recommend keeping baby teeth and repairing them when needed to keep them healthy as long as possible until the body is ready to loose them naturally. We’re excited to shine the spotlight on our wonderful Expanded Functions Dental Assistant, Maloree! 💙

Maloree attended the Dental Assisting program at Ivy Tech and has been working in dentistry for 5 years! Even more special, she started her journey with us as a patient of Dr. Shock and eventually became part of our Fairmount Family Dentist team! 🥰 Talk about going from patient to family! 🦷💙

One of Maloree’s favorite parts of dentistry is helping patients improve their smiles—especially when they’re going through a difficult or challenging time. She loves being able to give patients something to feel good about and a reason to smile! 😊✨

When she’s not at the office, you can find Maloree curled up with her Kindle 📖 or listening to her favorite artist, Justin Bieber! 🎶 And yes… she proudly admits she’s a ! 😂💜

🦷Tooth Fact Tuesday 🦷

Did you know that primary teeth, or baby teeth begin to form at about 6 weeks into pregnancy and by the time of birth all 20 primary teeth are formed? That’s one of many reasons good nutrition and proper prenatal care are important during pregnancy.
