Metal detectorist Peter Cross nearly discarded this strange object after pulling it from a muddy Buckinghamshire field in 2019. Once he cleaned away the clay, a gold plate revealed that he had found a set of human upper dentures dating from 1800 to 1850.

Craftspeople carved the teeth and gums by hand from ivory, possibly from a hippopotamus or walrus, then fitted them onto a gold base. A metal spring once connected the upper piece to a lower set, which has never been found.

Initials reading WSF and the number N 435 remain engraved in the gold, but no one has identified their wealthy former owner. A costly smile vanished into a field and waited around 200 years to return. 🦷🔍

One thing in life I don’t play about is my health. I do dentist visits twice every year. Happy to report a clean bill of health from the dentist 🦷 Your smile is often one of the first things people pay attention to… that’s more than enough motivation to keep the pearly whites, white.

It’s now been almost a full 15 years since I had my last cavity. Thankfully, no concerns for cavities here. When’s the last time you had your teeth checked?
