We know some patients worry about radiation exposure, but modern dental x-rays use extremely low levels of radiation and are designed with safety in mind. 💙

That’s right! ✨ A periodontal maintenance (aka “perio” maintenance) is NOT the same as a regular cleaning 🦷

When a dentist or hygienist performs a periodontal (perio) charting, they are measuring the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth. Healthy gum pockets typically range from 1–3 mm. When the depth reaches 4 mm or more, it may indicate bone loss and the early stages of gum disease.

Perio maintenance helps keep harmful bacteria under control and protect the gums where it matters most.

This maintenance (usually done after a deep cleaning) happens every 3–4 months so your dental team can closely monitor changes and prevent further bone loss.

Keeping those gum pockets clean = healthier gums AND better oral health
