🦷 Why don’t we use lead aprons for dental X-rays anymore?
You may notice that your dentist no longer puts a lead apron or thyroid collar on you for routine dental X-rays. Don’t worry… this does NOT mean we’re being less careful about radiation safety!
The American Dental Association (ADA) updated its recommendations in 2024 after reviewing the available research. Modern digital X-ray equipment and precise beam positioning already keep the radiation focused on the small area we need to examine.
In fact, a lead apron or thyroid collar can sometimes get in the way of the X-ray beam and cause an image to need to be retaken, meaning an additional X-ray exposure.
So instead of relying on a lead apron, the most effective ways we protect you are:
🦷 Only taking X-rays when they are clinically needed
🦷 Using modern digital sensors
🦷 Keeping the X-ray beam limited to the area being examined
🦷 Properly positioning you to get the best image the first time
🦷 Using the lowest radiation dose necessary to obtain a diagnostic image
And yes, these recommendations apply to children, adults, and pregnant patients as well.
We know it can feel strange to see your dental team stop using something that has been routine for decades. But radiation safety has changed as technology and research have improved! ❤️
If you have questions about why an X-ray is recommended or how we keep you safe, please ask us! We’re always happy to explain. 🦷
*we do have them if requested!
