Robert Tanner Freeman was born in 1846 near Washington D.C. to a carpenter who had bought his family’s freedom. As a teen, Robert worked for a white dentist who became a mentor to him. After being rejected from two other schools based on race, he was accepted as one of the first six students to attend Harvard Dental School. Robert earned his DMD in 1869. He only practiced for four years in Washington D.C. before dying of an unspecified disease in 1973. Despite his short life, Robert Tanner Freeman left an important legacy, including a grandson who became the first Black American to serve in the U.S. Cabinet.

While the best thing for your teeth would be to reduce “grazing” style snacking, we know that it can be good for bodies and moods in other ways! When brushing between eating isn’t an option, drinking or rinsing with water during and after meals and snacks reduces your risks of caries (tooth decay) by rinsing away food particles and buffering the harmful effects of acids. Happy snacking!
