Robert Tanner Freeman was born in 1846 near Washington D.C. to a carpenter who had bought his family’s freedom. As a teen, Robert worked for a white dentist who became a mentor to him. After being rejected from two other schools based on race, he was accepted as one of the first six students to attend Harvard Dental School. Robert earned his DMD in 1869. He only practiced for four years in Washington D.C. before dying of an unspecified disease in 1973. Despite his short life, Robert Tanner Freeman left an important legacy, including a grandson who became the first Black American to serve in the U.S. Cabinet.

While the best thing for your teeth would be to reduce “grazing” style snacking, we know that it can be good for bodies and moods in other ways! When brushing between eating isn’t an option, drinking or rinsing with water during and after meals and snacks reduces your risks of caries (tooth decay) by rinsing away food particles and buffering the harmful effects of acids. John Rock was born in 1825 to free parents in Salem, New Jersey. John’s parents encouraged his pursuit of education and by the age of 19, he became a teacher. While teaching, John studied medicine under two physicians and applied to medical school in 1848. John was rejected on the basis of race. John decided to transfer to field of dentistry, apprenticing under a white dentist. John opened a dental practice in Philadelphia in 1850 and within a year won an award for his work with dentures. John was finally admitted to medical school and became one of the first Black Americans to achieve a degree in medicine. John’s pursuit of education did not stop there. He later studied law and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1861. John Rock was also an abolitionist and civil rights leader. John spoke publicly, campaigning for equal rights and was a part of the National Equal Rights League. He is credited with the phrase “Black is beautiful.”
