Thinking about Ozempic®, Wegovy®, or another GLP-1 medication?
There’s one side effect many people don’t expect: dry mouth.
Researchers don’t believe these medications directly affect your salivary glands. Instead, they slow digestion, reduce appetite, and many people naturally end up eating, drinking, and chewing less throughout the day.
Less chewing + less stimulation + mild dehydration = less saliva.
And saliva is one of your mouth’s most important natural defenses against cavities, gum disease, and enamel wear.
Another side effect that may affect oral health is acid reflux.
Because food stays in the stomach longer, some people experience more heartburn or reflux. Over time, stomach acid can weaken enamel, especially on the inside surfaces of the upper teeth.
Some patients also report changes in taste, sometimes called “Ozempic tongue” — a metallic taste or foods tasting different than before.
The health benefits of GLP-1 medications can be tremendous.
