What’s in your child’s lunchbox this week? A few easy swaps can make it friendlier to their teeth.

Sticky snacks like fruit snacks, dried fruit, and some granola bars cling to teeth and give bacteria more time to make acid.

Here are some simple swaps to try:

1️⃣ Cheese sticks or cubes instead of fruit snacks

2️⃣ Crunchy veggies like carrots, cucumbers, or celery instead of chips

3️⃣ Fresh apple slices instead of dried fruit

4️⃣ Water instead of juice

Cheese supplies calcium and helps neutralize acids, and crunchy foods get saliva flowing, which helps rinse teeth naturally.

Quick dental tip: the ADA recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months, even sooner if the bristles look frayed or worn.

Over time, bacteria and plaque build up on the bristles, and worn bristles simply don’t clean as well. If you can’t remember the last time you swapped yours out, that’s usually a sign it’s time.

Also an important toothbrush reminder: store it upright and let it air dry instead of keeping it in a closed container, which helps prevent bacteria buildup even between swaps.
