"Composite Bonding – 6 Teeth: Diastema Closure

This case is a good reminder that treatment planning is about balancing the ideal with what is right for the individual patient.

The challenge here was the asymmetrical spacing, particularly on the patient’s upper left side. Ideally, I would have liked to carry out some orthodontics first to redistribute the spaces and create a more symmetrical foundation before restoring the teeth with composite bonding or veneers. This would have allowed even more ideal tooth proportions.

However, orthodontics also comes with increased treatment time and cost, the need for excellent compliance, and lifelong retainer wear to maintain the result. Those factors aren’t right for every patient.

After discussing all of the options, the patient chose to proceed with direct composite bonding.

This result was completed in a single appointment across the upper front six teeth. I’ll admit I was slightly apprehensive beforehand because of the particularly large space between the upper left central and lateral incisor, but I’m really pleased with how the final result turned out.

Sometimes, the best treatment isn’t simply the most ideal on paper. It’s the option that best balances longevity, aesthetics, practicality and the patient’s wishes."
