Attention college students 🎓 — if your dentist has flagged your wisdom teeth, summer break is the window you've been waiting for.

Here's the reality: waiting until your wisdom teeth are actively infected, impacted, or causing pain means a more complicated procedure, a longer recovery, and — worst case — dealing with it during finals week at school.

I've been practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery for years — and one of the most consistent patterns I've noticed is this: patients who come in with questions have better outcomes. Not because the surgery is easier, but because understanding and trust reduce anxiety, improve post-op compliance, and lead to a genuinely better experience.

Here are the 7 questions I'd tell any patient — or any family member — to ask before a procedure:

1. Are you board-certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery?
2. How many times have you performed this specific procedure — recently?
3. What are the risks specific to my case — not just generic disclaimers?
4. Who administers anesthesia, and what's the monitoring protocol?
5. What does recovery look like for someone with my health history?
6. Do you hold hospital privileges?
7. Can you walk me through cases similar to mine?
