Craving for desserts? Look into fresh fruits without added sugar. Here are a few suggestions:
- Avocado : one a day can help lower blood sugar level and also help to lose weight. It can make you full longer because of high fibers and healthy unsaturated fats. The smaller avocados have better flavor, more creamy, and cheaper in my experience.
- Papaya : high in fibers, antioxidants, and papain enzyme.
- Guava : high in fibers and vit c
- Persimmons: high in fibers and antioxidants
- Berries : high in fibers and antioxidants

Love chocolate? Look into dark chocolate with higher cocoa content at least 70% with the least added sugar. Dark chocolate has high fibers and antioxidants compared to other sweet treats.

Remember to consume in moderation.

Today, I just saw a 31-yr-old female patient who updated me on changes to her recent medical history. I just saw her 6 months ago, and her medical history was good. Recently, she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Her vision changed so she was diagnosed with diabetes retinopathy secondary to diabetes mellitus. She had to go through 2 eyes surgery because of that. When I asked if she has any family history, she said yes both sides of her family. Her A1C was high meaning her sugar level was not controlled.

What I suspect is that she has had diabetes for at least 5 years or several years without having any symptoms so of course she would not seek medical intervention. Human body can compensate a lot before it gives off major symptoms. If she was to catch it on time, she would not develop eye problem which can lead to blindness if left untreated.

If you know that your family history has this disease, it may be a good idea to check your blood work and sugar level at least once a year. Don’t wait until you feel something is off. That can be a bit late when you have to deal with many other complications. Pre-diabetes can be treated with lifestyle and diet changes without taking medications.

A lot of time when patients have missing back teeth, they most likely let it be since it’s hidden. Little do they know that when missing space left too long, the back tooth before the missing area will tip forward and the opposing tooth will move slowly out of socket causing their bite change and leading to more wear. If it’s the upper tooth, it can lead to sinus floor move down. Bone loss is inevitable as there is no more load. The bone is like muscle. All these complications can lead to high cost of treatment in the future.

When front teeth are involved, patients tend to seek help sooner because it’s their smile. People can see it. At our practice, we take time to plan each case with the use of cone beam 3D imaging so that we can deliver with precision on day of treatment.

How to avoid seeing dentists more than 2 times a year for routine cleaning?
First, knowing your caries risk help you understanding your oral health. Education, education, education! It's never too late or too early to start educate yourself and your children about cavities.
Just remember that sugar comes in many forms such as simple sugar from candies and sugar from food/veggies/fruits. In our modern society, sugar is used more than in our human history. That's why, you see higher prevalence of caries. If I can tell one thing, it would be to rinse your mouth with water EVERY time you eat or drink anything in between your morning and evening brushing. It will help reduce the amount of sugar right after your eat.
