September is National Gum Care Month.

Healthy gums have a firm texture and are a pale or coral pink color; no bleeding during brushing or flossing.

Unhealthy gums are red, swollen, puffy, or tender tissue, along with frequent bleeding or persistent bad breath.

Did you know our regular dental exams include your gums? If you are concerned you may have an issue affecting your gums, call to schedule an appointment. The earlier you catch gum disease, the easier it is to treat.

For strong, healthy gums brush teeth twice a day for two minutes and floss between teeth daily. Visit your dentist every six months for professional cleanings and early detection. Avoid to***co use and eat a balanced diet low in added sugars.

How can you Prevent Cavities?

Here are some things you can do that can help prevent cavities:

1) Brush twice daily — Brush for two full minutes each time to effectively remove plaque.

2) Use ADA‑accepted fluoride toothpaste — Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent decay.

3) Floss once a day — Daily flossing removes plaque and food particles from areas a toothbrush cannot reach.

4) Limit frequent snacking — Reducing how often you eat minimizes the acid exposure that contributes to cavities.

5) Avoid sticky or chewy foods between meals — Items like dried fruit or candy cling to teeth; if eaten, they are best consumed with meals.

6) Reduce sugary and carbonated drinks — Try not to sip these beverages throughout the day, and avoid sucking on candy or mints.

7) Replace your toothbrush regularly — Change it every three months or sooner if the bristles show wear.

8) Schedule routine dental cleanings — Professional cleanings every six months support long‑term oral health.

It is well known that dental hygiene contributes to our overall health and well-being. Throughout June, Oral Health Month serves as a timely reminder to prioritize our dental care and make sure we’re maintaining a healthy smile.

We recommend good oral hygiene practices, preventive care, and regular dental check-ups. You too can maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime. Brush and floss twice a day. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks. Visit Progressive Dentistry for scheduled appointments.

Tips for a Tooth‑Friendly Easter

1. Choose Wisely
Pick dark chocolate when possible—it contains less sugar and melts off teeth more quickly. Avoid sticky candies like gummies, caramels, and toffee that cling to enamel and hard candies that stay in the mouth longer.

2. Timing Matters
Enjoy sweets right after meals instead of snacking throughout the day. This helps limit repeated acid attacks on your enamel.

3. Hydrate
Drink plenty of water to rinse away sugar and acids. Staying hydrated also supports your mouth’s natural cleansing process.

4. Wait to Brush
After eating sugary or acidic treats, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. This gives softened enamel time to reharden and prevents unnecessary wear.

5. Non‑Candy Treats
Consider fun alternatives for Easter baskets—toys, stickers, books, craft kits/supplies, games, gift cards, or outdoor activities make great low‑sugar options. Plant a tree or start a garden.

6. Routine Care
Brush twice a day and floss daily, even during the holiday excitement.
