Did you know babies suck their thumbs in the womb? Ultrasounds have captured it as early as 15 weeks! 🤱
It's a built-in self-soothing reflex , it lowers stress hormones, calms the heart rate, and helps little ones feel safe. So no, it's not a bad habit. It's actually biology doing its job.
Most kids stop on their own between ages 2 and 4. No intervention needed.
When does it become a concern?
If the habit is still going strong past age 4 or 5, we want to pay attention. Once permanent teeth start coming in around age 6, prolonged thumb sucking can lead to an open bite or teeth shifting forward.
The good news, we can help, and we do it with kindness. Positive reinforcement, not shame, is what actually works.
