As September is recognized as National Gum Care Month, it is essential to acknowledge that 47.2% (or 67 million Americans) are affected by gum disease to some extent.
What constitutes Gum Disease?
Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two primary forms of gum disease, both resulting from bacterial infections in the gums. Gingivitis is a mild manifestation of the disease, marked by bleeding and possible gum pain. If left untreated, it can escalate to periodontitis.
What are the implications?
The primary concern is that periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss. On average, individuals aged 20-39 are missing one tooth, those aged 40-49 are missing 3.5 teeth, and those over 60 are missing eight teeth, primarily due to gum disease. Timely dental intervention can prevent gingivitis from progressing to periodontitis and its associated complications.
