⏳ What actually happens between orthodontic appointments?

When we adjust your braces or give you a new set of aligners, we’re applying controlled, strategic force.

That pressure signals your body to kick off a process called bone remodeling.

Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes:

🦷 The gentle force stimulates the alveolar bone (the bone that holds the tooth roots)
🦴 Cells are released that break down bone, creating space for the tooth to move
🦴 As the tooth shifts, new bone forms in the space left behind
➡️ The tooth gradually stabilizes in its new position

It’s a slow, biologic process, and that’s a good thing. Moving teeth too fast can damage roots, gums, or bone.

That’s also why consistency matters:

Some orthodontic concerns don’t show up in photos, or even in the mirror.

A child’s smile can look perfectly fine on the surface, while issues are developing underneath. That’s because orthodontists don’t just look at teeth. We evaluate how the jaws are growing, how teeth are erupting, and how the bite is shaping up.

During an orthodontic exam, we assess things like:
• Teeth that haven’t erupted yet or are impacted
• Jaw width and bite relationships
• How baby teeth are guiding (or blocking) adult teeth
• Growth issues that could impact future oral health, function, or appearance

This is why the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Not because every child needs treatment, but because early insight helps us monitor growth and intervene at the right time to achieve the best results in the least invasive way possible.
