Has your child's permanent tooth started coming in behind a baby tooth? It's actually a pretty common occurrence, referred to as "shark teeth." 🦈

Here's what's going on:
🦷 Normally, as the permanent tooth gets ready to come in, it dissolves the baby tooth's root, causing it to fall out first.
🦷 When the timing is off, the permanent tooth erupts behind the baby tooth instead of from underneath it, so the root doesn't fully dissolve.
🦷 In many cases, the baby tooth will loosen and fall out on its own once your child starts wiggling it.

However, if the baby tooth doesn't loosen or the permanent tooth continues to erupt behind it, it's a good idea to schedule an evaluation.

Dr. Jeff can determine whether everything is progressing normally or if a little help is needed to keep your child's smile on the right track.

Buying school lunch with braces? You don't have to live on mashed potatoes.

Look for easy-to-chew options like pasta, chicken tenders (cut into bite-size pieces), and sandwiches on soft bread.

A good rule of thumb: if it's really hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy, choose something else. Or modify it before eating (cut it up, take meat off the bone, omit the hard toppings, etc.).

Back to school = back to routines. 🎒

And believe it or not, that can be a good thing for orthodontic treatment.

A more predictable schedule makes it easier to stay on top of things like wearing your aligners or rubber bands, brushing and flossing consistently, and remembering your retainer.

We love summer fun as much as anyone, but a little structure can go a long way in keeping your smile progress on track.

"Dr. Jeff, my teeth feel loose!" 😳

Believe it or not, that's often a sign your treatment is working.

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth by stimulating the bone around them to remodel. As this happens, it's normal for teeth to feel slightly mobile. Once they reach their new positions, the bone rebuilds and stabilizes them.

So if your teeth feel kind of wiggly during treatment, don't panic; we expect it!

Of course, if you experience severe pain, an injury, or a tooth suddenly feels much looser than before, give our office a call.

If you wear clear aligners, don't forget to take them out before jumping in.

Chlorinated pool water can discolor or damage aligners and may affect their fit.
